The Nest.

“A place of rest, retreat or lodging”, says one of the definitions of the word.

We are born into one, landing in there, literally.

With the love and the warmth of the home around us, we grow up. Well, most of us fortunate ones.

And then, as we grow up enough to move out for studies or work or for some other reason, we leave that nest.

The one we were so happy being in. Where we have so many memories. And where our family remains.

We leave in search for a new life. In pursuit of a goal. In the quest for an adventure.

When that happens, from our perspective we are just moving to an exciting new phase. But from our parents’ perspective, an era comes to an end.

One which was defined by our voices, our noises, and our actions. One that was centered around us.

Our move creates a void. In their life, in their routines, in their minds. But they too learn to live with it.

As we go through our life, we then form our own nest. And repeat the cycle.

Why does this have to be so? Why can’t we just be in one nest?

I guess because that’s how everyone grows. When different nests exist, it gives us a chance to be in different places. To enjoy different facets of life.

It also allows us to expand our horizons. And learn the value of building a nest, rather than only inheriting it.

Most importantly, it allows us to experience what nurturing means. And to practice it first hand.

For, what is life without some learning…
